July 17, 2010 Moon-Perrett Reunion

Time is tickin'  and the Moon-Perrett Reunion will be here before we know it.  I've heard from many out of town relatives who plan to attend.  Please pass the information on to all the relatives in "your neck of the woods" so that we don't miss anyone.  This promises to be a fun-packed day for all of us.   Don't forget your HUGE picnic basket filled with goodies and drinks.  We hope to make a day of it and those who want can visit the Snow Camp house, the cemetery where many of the Perretts are buried and then the Sword of Peace that night.  There is a restaurant at the Sword of Peace also - in case you are tired of picnic foods by nighttime.

YOU GUYS ARE COMING HOME!!!!  WE'RE SO THANKFUL FOR FAMILY!

July will be here before you realize!

I plan to send a bulk email again after Easter - reminding everyone of the Snow Camp Reunion in Snow Camp on July 17, 2010.

I have found badminton equipment as well as several other outdoor games for the younger set to enjoy while we oldies sit around and talk about the good old days!

The Sword of Peace schedule for 2010 is also out and I will attach that in case your family wants to view that.  There is also a restaurant at the Sword of Peace if you are tired of reunion food by that night.

Life is good!

Inez Johnson Waller - Our 100 year old young relative

This week I received a real treat in my mailbox - a letter from one of our relatives, Inez Johnson Waller, who was born August 3, 1909 - YES, that makes her 100. Ina B. gave her my name and contact information. Ina's daughter, Paula lives about an hour drive away from her. She currently resides at Green Ridge Gilliland Manor 210 Big Spring Road # 109 Newville, PA 17241. She lived in Asheville for 72 years, her husband passed in 1985 and she moved to Carlisle in 2001 to be near Nancy.

Jesse Taylor Johnson was her grandfather (married Louise Jane Carter) . Son William Hampton Johnson was her father - he married Alice Melvin in 1906. Sallie Sarah (Johnson) Perrett who was my great grandmother was Jesse Taylor Johnson's sister.

Inez was looking for pictures of her grandfather's siblings and I do have a few shots, plus information from the family tree, so I've printed off the information and am sending to her today. Inez tells me she had only two sisters, neither of whom never married. One sister, Jewel, and Inez were born in Gibsonville and lived in Greensboro most of the time. Inez's parents are buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery (Snow Camp, but a Liberty address). Inez used to go to the Johnson reunions and she remembers Sarah McPherson from Snow Camp who took her to visit some of the cousins on her father's side. She remembers visiting Flossie (Moon) Bare also.

I think it is wonderful that she has made contact and if you are reading this blog, I encourage you to write to her. She's a remarkable lady. BLESSINGS INEZ!!

Thomas McBane June Carol Mc Bane Lena Moon - Black & White Memories

It has snowed here twice in the past week, so I've been into the old folders that mom had with black and white negatives. You can scan and invert the photo and actually get a pretty good shot of things.

This is Lena Moon - Thomas McBane and June Carol McBane. A shot of Thomas on the bike and Lena Moon on the porch waving. Thomas and June Carol from a front view.

Thomas passed recently - and I know there was a reunion in heaven.  Whisper a prayer for his wife, Sugar and his boys, Tommy and Richard.  Rest in Peace, Thomas!

There is a DIVA in our lineage......Look for her at the Reunion!

Moon Perrett Reunion July 15 1995 Candid Shots

The 1995 reunion was the first one that I planned - in honor of my mother's birthday on July 16th . Looking back, it seems like just yesterday, but by the time July rolls around - it has been 15 years......

Look closely some of you younger Moon-Perretts - you were just a kid.... and those of you my age, well we haven't changed a bit have we.

5 - 10 - 12 - 15 The Remaining Children

There are four infant deaths recorded in the family record for Achsa Beatrice Perrett and Ed Moon, All boys according to what Danny Moon told me at the last reunion. One of the infants I had a name for, but not the remaining three:

5 - Baby Boy Infant lived 9 days
10 - Walter - infant death
12 - Baby Boy - infant death
15 - Baby Boy - infant death

One can only imagine how quickly 15 pregnancies would deplete the nutrients a woman needs - during a time when they didn't have prenatal vitamins or iron pills or Boost or other vitamin drinks. Remember how tired you were caring for one infant - then think about being pregnant or caring for small children from 9 months before the birth of Penie on April 17, 1896 until the birth of child 15 - Baby Boy Infant Death sometime after Wade was born (Jan 5 - 1921). That by any measure is a lot of stress on the body, mind and soul!

Rest in Peace - Achsa!

11 - James "Jim" Delacy Moon

James "Jim" Delacy Moon was the eleventh child born to Ed Moon & Achsa Beatrice Perrett on September 10, 1915 in Snow Camp, NC. He died May 6, 1974 in Orlando Florida at the age of 58.

Jim first married Mabel St. Clair and later, Alma Fullington. He lived in Orlando Florida during his later years (this is hard to say - he was a year younger than I am now when he passed). The thing I remember most about Jim and Alma was they always had a dog in tow. When I was about 9, our family along with Aunt Lena and Uncle Clyde traveled to see them in Florida on Christmas Day - what were they thinking ---- hours on the road and no bathrooms or eating places open. I've never been back to Florida since that trip.
Jim and Alma are buried in Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington, NC.

Remaining Moon-Perrett Kids Pose

This shot is one of the four remaining Moon kids at some gathering. Front row seated L-R is Clady Moon McBane, then Ava Moon McVey (my mom); back row L-R is Lena Moon Griffin and cutie pie Wade Moon.
These folks all look alike!!! Check out their youthful shots for fun.

Midway Sunday Afternoon - Moons Stop Traffic

OK - here is where I really could use some help - if you recognize anyone. Several of them I do - these are from Sallie Moon's photos and she seemed to have more pictures in the family box that I have than anyone else. Sallie is in the middle row - far left - Flossie is Beside her and I think Dallie is on the end of the same row.

The back row far left is Ed McBane, then in the center is Clady and beside her is Lena. I do not know anyone else but these people are in lots of the photos. It's a shame they weren't my mom's. She labeled everything her entire life - so there was no question about who is this.

Moons And Some Spouses

A grainy shot but I could recognize some people: L-R John, and I believe Dallie peeking over his shoulder), then Clyde Griffin, Lena Moon Griffin, Clady Moon McBane and Allen; Vesta and Sam Moon; Curtis I think.... (the photo says Wendell - but I don't think that's him or that my mother had met him at that point ini time) behind Penie, Ava and Jim.
This house looks a little like the one that was beside the store in Snow Camp - that I think some of them lived in at one point. I don't know though. Those of you interested in ancestry - get interested while someone who is still living can tell you what the deal is. I wish that I had.

All dressed up - that's what strikes me in all these old photos - people use to dress up - boy has that gone out the window. They didn't have much - but boy are they are fine looking bunch!

Clady, Flossie and Lena Moon

Clady, Flossie and Lena - three sisters who stood by each other all the way to the end. Family!

A Good Looking Group

This picture is not clear - but I can pick out several of the Moon children. Lena and Clady are in the front row and I believe on the second row are Dallie (hand on Jim's head?) Flossie, John and Sam. The lady on the back row left is Annie Thompson.

If you recognize someone, please let me know!

The middle row is Jim and Ava

Front row is "little Wade"

Aren't they all just too cute!
I imagine you had to fight for your spot.

Chef Appelt

Thought you would enjoy reading about Owen Appelt - one of our relatives, from a July 2009 article
Owen - if you see this post, hope that you can make it to the reunion and I know plenty of people who would love to sample your food!

The Keeper - The Encourager - The Requester....

My mother was the last to pass away of the 15 Moon-Perrett kids; thus she became the keeper of the family photos and information that siblings had kept where there was no remaining family member to claim these treasures.

I have attempted to catalog this information in books that will be out for review at the reunion. I also have attempted to compile the Family Tree which I can email to you upon request - Excel Spreadsheet. The latest generation is not added - this was pretty up to date 4 years back, but has been sitting since that time. Speaking of aging - look what 4 years (almost and the stopping of making Hennalucent has done for my aging processing) OUCH!

The older I get, family is important to me. I only wish that I had taken an interest during the time period when my parents were living and their memory clear - there is so much I would like to know that I will never know - unless those of you reading this blog can help fill in some of the blanks.

Join us in Snow Camp this year - July 17th 2010 at Cane Creek Friends meeting with a huge picnic basket in tow. We are spending the day and some of us staying to watch the outdoor drama that night.

What began as a family in a rural part of North Carolina has spread out throughout the USA and to the Philippines. We are all connected no matter how far we have traveled. We are family and neither time nor distance can erase those ties. There are two young relatives still in the Philippines that I hope can raise the funds and jump through paperwork to get here.

I urge you to send this blog on to others who are a branch of this Family. Help add to, change, update what is written here: for one day your children will want to know where they came from and it will be nice if you know the answer.

Love you

Sue McVey Ward

Graham - North Carolina

8 - Lena Nora Keller (Moon) Griffin

This young lady was my favorite of the Moon-Perrett bunch - probably because she treated me and my sister as her own children. At any rate, I have many memories as a child with she and Uncle Clyde. Lena Nora Keller Moon was born on March 29, 1911 in Snow Camp, NC. She died on June 1, 1991 in Burlington, NC. Lena married the love of her life, Albert Clyde Griffin but was unable to have children of her own. In her later years she remarried (and I won't elaborate on that disaster).

The Moons lived at Midway when Lena was a young woman - the half way spot on the plank road that connected Burlington to Graham. Sunday afternoons, Lena would dress up and sit on the front porch of their house. According to Lena, their daddy - whom they called Poppy, told her to "just get out in the middle of the road - they would have to stop then or go around her". Lena was a joy to be around - get her and Clyde started and it was nothing but fun.

Some Interesting Tidbits !

14 Wade Harding Moon - 7 Sam Moon

Wade Harding Moon was born January 5, 1921 in Snow Camp North Carolina and died April 30, 1996 in Newman Georgia. Wade was next to the youngest child born to Henry Edmond Moon and Achsa Beatrice Perrett. He had the prettiest eyes that just sparkled.
He married Dot Vaughn Kernodle on May 31, 1951 in Burlington, NC. He retired from the U. S. Air Force, serving in WW II, in Korea and the Vietnam Wars.

In this shot, Wade and his "big brother Sam" share a hug.

"Moon" Girls

This shot is grown up Moon girls:
L-R: Lena, Penie, Dallie, Ava, Flossie and Clady

7 - Samuel Lewis Moon

This is one man that I remember was fun with capitals FUN. He loved to pick better than anyone I know. Samuel Lewis Moon was born April 9, 1907 in Snow Camp, NC. He died July 15, 1972 in Snow Camp, NC. His first marriage to Vesta Coble produced a son, Billy Moon.

His second marriage to Edith Griffin produced two sons, Princeton and Sam and a daughter, Shirley. To Sam - Snow Camp was home!

WAY BACK

This one is before my time, but I do have photos of another reunion when I was about 4 that looks similar. These are the memories that made me want to plan the first reunion we had many years back. The Moon-Perrett Family has always enjoyed fun times and family. Do you recognize people. Please comment below if you do. The little girl out front there is my sister Kay.

Zeno Johnson & Martha "Patsy" Terry / Sarah Emily Duncan

Zeno Johnson married Martha "Patsy" Terry first and had 9 children:

1. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Johnson

2. Sarah "Sallie" Johnson (my link to this tree)

3. Mary Johnson

4. Rebecca Johnson

5. Frances Catherine "Kate" Johnson

6. Viola Johnson

7. Taylor Johnson

8. Bingham "Bing" Johnson

9. Zeb H. Johnson

He then married Sarah Emily Duncan (photo is of Zeno and Sarah)

1. William Ernest Johnson

11. Infant Female

Henry Edmond Moon

Henry Edmond Moon (10-15-1870 - 10-2-1933) was the son of John Henry Moon and Dicie Brady. He married Achsa Beatrice Perrett and fathered 15 children.

John Henry Moon - Tabitha (Dicie) Brady

As best I can piece together - the chart is the family breakout of the marriage of John Henry Moon and Tabitha (Dicie) Brady.
John Henry Moon is in the photo sitting with his hands crossed (which by the way do not look real - anybody know what that is about?)
Henry Edmond Moon was their firstborn child (10-15-1870) (who knows??? the first kid has the last name of Brady - and nobody is talking or alive that knows). Anyway he is my link to this family (he was my Grandfather who died many years before my birth)
Charles Fletcher Moon is standing in front of the tree, with hat in hand.

The picture of the three together (siblings) Emma (Moon) Longest, Newt Moon and Nance Moon (FYI if you happen to know Libby Curtis Robinson who still operates their family's flower business - Curtis Flower Farm on the Snow Camp Road and is about my age from this branch of the tree - then you know that Emma (Moon) Longest will never die as long as Libby lives). They could pass for twins.

A Few Snapshots From 2006 Reunion

Glamour Shots.....

Just a few shots from the 2006 Moon-Perrett Reunion in Snow Camp. If you didn't make it - you missed such a good time - we played the "toilet paper" game.... and 2010 promises to be even better. Sallie (Pendergraph) Glisson spreads a little cheer with her disguise. Duke & Bunny Perrett pose alongside Tess Perrett, Gina (Perrett) Boettcher and "Wild Bill" Perrett (this was our first time meeting Tess, Gina and Bill - and it made the reunion! A group shot of one "branch" of our tree.

Achsa Beatrice (Perrett) Moon - This blog is dedicated to her!

In this photo is Achsa holding my mother (Ava as an infant). On her right is Lena and on her left is Clady. I believe that Achsa had a very hard life - with 15 pregnancies and none of the modern conveniences of today. What struck me as I scanned these two photos is that I am relatively sure she is wearing the same dress in both pictures - but as you can see from the photos, she has aged tremendously over the time span.
It is easy to see that Achsa had a baby on her lap for a period of 25-26 years - all during a time when babies were born at home and there was no such thing as pre-natal care or disposable diapers or formula in a can. It was also during a time when none of the modern conveniences we have today were available and what conveniences existed, were not a commodity a poor family with many children had access to. As a woman, I cannot find the words to describe the total exhaustion she must have felt; yet I can readily see it in her face on the few pictures I am fortunate to have. I heard my mother refer to the hard life tht her mother had endured, yet Achsa strived to bring up her children to know and do right. Husband, Ed, died several years prior to Achsa, leaving her with young children to provide for. I have heard my mother speak many times about how her older siblings stepped up to help raise her - providing clothes and a chance to get an education. Achsa Beatrice Perrett is the real reason that I became interested in our family tree and old pictures and stories behind the pictures. By my take, she was an extraordinary woman. Ed was around 10 years older than her and I understand could be a real pain to put up with! (Yes, I can say that - he was my Grandfather). It is the hard times that make us stronger people. This blog is dedicated to the loving memory of Achsa Beatrice Perrett.
Achsa Beatrice Perrett born March 23, 1880 is the daughter of Sarah "Sallie" (Johnson) Perrett and Daniel Kirkman Perrett; the sister of Zeno Franklin Perrett, Walter Kenneth perrett, Virgil Addison Perrett, Luther August Perrett and Salem Perrett.

Achsa married Henry E. Moon. She died December 18, 1935. Achsa is the mother of 15 children, several of which were infant deaths. Living included: Penie Elizabeth, Dallie, Clady, Flossie, Lena, Ava, Sam, John, James and Wade.

Achsa died at the age of 55 at her residence in Snow Camp, N. C. She is buried at South Fork Friends Church in Snow Camp.

Achsa is my (Sue McVey Ward) grandmother.

Sarah "Sallie" (Johnson) Perrett

Sarah "Sallie" (Johnson) is the wife of Daniel Kirkman Perrett and the mother of:

1. Zeno Franklin Perrett 2. Walter Kenneth Perrett, 3. Achsa Beatrice Perrett 4. Virgil Addison Perrett, 5. Luther August Perrett and 6. Salem Perrett

6 - Sallie Rodema (Moon) Braxton

My mother was the last of the Moon girls to pass - and thus became the keeper of a lot of the old photos of her famly. There seem to be more of Sallie than any other sibling. Sallie Moon was born March 15, 1905 and died July 7, 1933. Perhaps there are so many photos because of health issues she had and they knew photos would be the only remembrance. She married Homer Braxton. There were no children. Sallie has a smile on her face in every picture.
In looking over old pictures, it is canny how much the girls resembled each other. Particularly Lena, Dallie and Sallie.

4 - John Henry Moon

John Henry Moon was born January 19, 1902 and died November 20, 1971. He was a confirmed bachelor who loved to pick and have fun. I remember he tied a piece of nylon hose around a turkey's neck that he shot so that he could get a picture made to send to his brother Jim in Florida. He wanted it to look like a huge gobbler. In this picture, he's kicked back sleeping - a pose I have seen him in many times.

He lived way back off the road and we would go there often in the truck. He had pigs running free inside the fenced area where his house was - and I was petrified one would get me before I could make a dash from the truck to the house. He - as usual - thought it was funny.

3 - Dallie Myrah (Moon) McBane

Dallie was born November 21, 1899 and died May 13, 1962. She married Henry Edward McBane on July 5, 1930 in Graham, North Carolina. She had one daughter, June Carol (McBane) Vaughn.

2 - Flossie Jane (Moon) Bare

Flossie was born January 1, 1898 and died January 18, 1968. She married J.C. Bare, better known as Watt on March 1, 1941. Flossie had no children of her own, but helped raise 7 stepchildren. She loved working intricate finger sewing projects, embroidery, cut thread table cloths, etc.
I am told Flossie had red hair when she was young. I don't know why that surprised me - but her hair had been white for as long as I remember her. We use to visit her regularly - I was always fascinated with whatever project she happened to be working on at the time.

I'm Proud To Be A Moon-Perrett

What began in Alamance County, North Carolina is now spread throughout the United States and the Philippines - that I know about. Family roots connect our lives in ways that no amount of time or distance can alter. Hope you will travel home - July 17, 2010. We can't wait to see you!

13 Ava Kathleen (Moon) McVey

This is my mom, Ava Kathleen (Moon) McVey - born 7-16-1918 - died 2-19-2005 , the 13th child of 15 born to Achsa (Perrett) Moon and Henry Moon. This is the third reunion I have planned in honor/memory of her birthday. I love you mama! Thanks for choosing a Christian man as our father and for raising us to know the difference between what is right and what is wrong.

1 Penie Elizabeth (Moon) Pendergraph - 14 Wade Moon

Individual photo is Margaret Pendergraph - at first glance I thought it was my mom (Ava Moon) - so there is some lookalike definitely) as Margaret's sister Sallie - looks so much like my Mom now it is incredible. Mom always wrote on the back of everything - so yes, this is Margaret.
The group photo is Penie Pendergraph, Wade Moon and Brenda Jordan - I think in 1954 at a Moon-Perrett reunion. That is Clady McBane in the background (right).
Penie Elizabeth Moon was the first born child of Edmond Moon and Achsa Perrett. She was born April 17, 1986 in Snow Camp, NC and died February 19, 1978 in Chapel Hill, N.C. Penie married Curtis Paul Pendergraph on August 4, 1918.
As a child, I remember visiting their home frequently. Penie was such a short little woman and I towered above her even as a child. She was a sweet spirit!
